What a smart home in Kent actually needs before you buy a gadget

Most smart home problems are network problems. What to sort first in a Kent home, and what to buy second.

Start with the network

Every smart device talks over your WiFi, and in a Kent home with brick walls and an extension that is the weak point. Thirty of them on a router designed for six is why the lights stop responding and the doorbell misses people. Before any device is bought, the house needs WiFi that reaches every room at full speed, which usually means wired access points rather than boosters, and a separate network for the smart devices so they cannot slow down your laptops.

Pick one ecosystem

Apple Home, Google Home or Amazon Alexa. Each is fine. Mixing three of them is not. Choose the one that matches the phones in the house and buy devices that work with it. We will tell you before you spend anything if something you like is a dead end.

Lighting is the best first project

Smart lighting changes how a house feels more than anything else on the list. Dimmable, colour changing, on scenes for cooking and evenings, and switched off in one tap at bedtime. It also works with the physical switches, so nobody has to find their phone to turn a light on.

Then heating, then security

A smart thermostat with room by room control pays for itself. Cameras, a doorbell and an alarm on the same app as the lights make the whole thing feel like one system, which is the point.

Wired where you can

Anything that does not move, the TV, the consoles, the desktop, the cameras, should be on a cable. It frees the WiFi for the things that need it. That is the basis of every smart home installation we do across Kent, the home tech care plan keeps it that way, and the guide on mesh versus wired access points explains the network side.
